Sewing: Simple Pillow Covers Made From Recycling Old Curtains

I used to sew a lot, curtains, pillowcases, skirts and dresses, but I don't do much sewing lately.

Saturday, I was home all day, and did some tidying and also decided to bite the bullet and get some pillow covers made.  I'd decided that the pillow covers that I had made years ago had seen better days and it was time for them to go!

I have a fabric stash, and sometimes I wonder why I hold on to so much of it, because when I go to make something I never like what I already have.  However, I did remember that I had some curtains a friend had given me.  They had hung in her daughters room, and even though they were faded in places, she gave them to me when they moved, because I love the Waverly pattern so much.  I've used them as shower curtains in my bathroom, but otherwise they've sat in my stash.

Well, not any more!

The color looks different because of the poor lighting in my living room this morning, but they are the same.

I simply measured the pillows, cut the fabric about an half an inch wider than the pillow (I wanted the pillows to be fluffy), did straight line sewing of seams, and stitched the cover closed around the pillows.  I made two sets, two different sizes.

I like them, and my kids have mentioned how much they like them, too.  It feels great to have cute pillows in the living room, and to have been able to recycle this fabric! That's a win in my book!

  2. I love it when we can recycle like that! And your pillow are so pretty! I have a sewing machine but have never taken it out of it's box. The only sewing I've done was way back in junior high hom ec class. Sewing is on my bucket list though - I want to make a quilt some day!

  3. Your pillows are very pretty. I, too, have been doing some sewing. I wanted to recover the cushions on our screened patio furniture. I love to recycle fabric but this time I had to purchase because I needed a lot. I did find several online sites that sell fabric remnants so I got a really good price. I am very pleased with how they look and am so glad I was able to do these myself. Next I am going to tackle some type of window treatment for the french doors. I do already have lots of fabric on hand that I can use for that project. Everytime I sew something so satisfying like these projects, I call my mother-in-law to thank her for teaching me how to sew!

  5. Always fun to create something new from something you already have. Why is it that no one likes the fabrics already in her own stash? It is a crazy phenomenon for sure.

  6. That's beautiful fabric. I have quite a few cushion covers in my linen closet - I like to change them frequently. If I'm feeling ambitious I'll insert zippers, otherwise I do an overlapping closure in the back that's fast and easy.

  7. Pillows are on my to-do list, too.

I have scraps from recovering the "benches" behind our woodstove and want to make some pillows to put on the pew across the room, since I took its pillows and put them on the benches.

And, I agree with Vee-it's a crazy phenomenon re: stashes. Kinda like not having anything to wear in the closet, maybe? I have more stash than I can reasonably keep organized but never anything appropriate to the project I want to do...
