Home Education: Home Economics

Do you remember my little Home Economics class?  Two of my girls and two sisters from our church?  The ones who made these cute skirts?  We started our class up again and have decided to learn about herbs.

So we watched a bit of a video from the Bulk Herb Store - Making Herbs Simple.

After we watched some of the dvd, the girls got to plant some herbs.

They each planted two or three kinds.  Rachel is trying Lavender - I hope it grows well for her.  I had no luck growing it from seed last year!

I am going to start some German Chamomile, Italian Parsley, and some flowers this weekend.

It was fun to learn about making herbal hair treatments, and how to use them in products for your skin!

I think these are fun and useful things to learn as a part of our class.

Did you take Home EC in school?  What was your favorite part of the class?

  1. I did take home economics in 7th through 9th grades and I loved it! I didn't take it in senior high because I was on an academic track. That is kind of a shame, because home economics skills are so useful and I had to learn many of those skills on my own.

My favorite part of the class was definitely the sewing. I think it was partly because we made individual projects in the sewing class. Cooking was done in groups which made it difficult to reach any level of skill.

I'd like to be a part of your class!

  2. This is a subject we never covered in Home Ec....but it is great!! I loved making sugar easter eggs. Pretty decor in the 70's for our Easter table.

  3. I loved home ecomonics and took it for 3 years. I learned so much about cooking, sewing and managing a home. I'm sure your children are benefiting greatly from your classes on home keeping. My husband and I were discussing this very subject this morning--how important it is for boys to understand how to sew a button on and cook also. ♥

    1. Oh yes! My son still at home will learn a thing or two as well! Really important! My brother is a very good cook. He enjoys it and it is a blessing in his family as his wife has a very bad back!

  4. I loved Home Ec and wanted to be a Home Ec teacher. Because of that desire to go to university, I had to stop taking the classes in high school and concentrate on science. I became a French teacher instead of a Home Ec teacher, but cooking, sewing and homemaking have always been an important part of my life. Now I sub for a Home Ec teacher and it's such fun to see boys and girls learning these skills. Some of the boys do a marvelous job of sewing - they are so precise and willing to unpick stitches to get things just right.

  5. Yes, I took Home Ec for a year in high school. Half of the year was spent in the sewing studio and half of the year was spent in the kitchen. I preferred the kitchen. I would have found this project fun.

  6. You are teaching them some valuable things they will use in the future! I don't think I took home Ec that I remember but I did take sewing in Summer school. Kind of wish I was doing something else that being in school that summer but the knowledge has served me well over many years.

  7. ....a little bit of sewing; a little bit of cooking. Not sure I excelled :) I remember making white sauce and (maybe) a skirt? Wow! That's going WAY back there for me.
