Emma

Did any of you watch the new BBC adaptation of Jane Austen's Emma? Jane Austen wrote of the character of Emma Woodhouse "I have created a character no one but myself will much like."

At times this is very true - she frustrates me, just as Scarlett O'Hara frustrates me, but that is a story for another time!

I like this version of Emma though it is not very true to the actually words that Miss Austen wrote. The actors are good in their roles - I now truly despise Mr. Frank Churchill!

Emma and Mr.George Knightley. Mr. Knightley's brother John is married to Emma's sister Isabella.

Miss Bates. You feel deeply for this vicar's daughter who lives in gentle poverty. She and her mother live by the care of others, including Mr.Knightley and Mr. Woodhouse.

Emma's protege', Harriet Smith.

Another thing I liked about this miniseries is that it showed Isabella and John's family. Here Mr. Knightley was visiting John and Isabella and the children are playing and running around. They weren't invisible as they are in other adaptations of Emma.

If you haven't read the book - I encourage you to do so, especially if you have only seen the movies of Emma. Did you know there have been four movies of Emma? One done in 1972, two done in the year of 1996, and this one done in 2009. The two 1996 versions we refer to as "the one with Gwyneth Paltrow", which we love, and the one with the "grumpy Emma, " which we don't like as well. That Mr.Knightley is certainly not someone anyone would fall for...he is grumpy too!

Have you seen any of these? Which is your favorite? We bought the dvd at Costco and it has all sorts of fun extras like costuming the characters, and locations! We know have all 4 versions of Emma!

  1. It's so funny you posted about this movie because I just saw it on PBS...my first real experience with anything Jane Austen and now I'm hooked. I'm recording all of them that are being shown on PBS and I've reserved a couple of books at the library and can't wait to read them. I'll have to check out the other versions of the movie too. Thanks for a great post.

  3. I just loved this version of Emma. (although I haven't watched the others to compare it with!) I saw this at Costco myself and didn't buy it, hopefully it'll still be there when I go again.

  4. Hi, so nice to have "met" you. Thank you for stopping by my blog to say hi and for your sweet comments, I look forward to your future visits. So you're in SouthCentral PA as well, what a small world.
I LOVE Emma and I did really enjoy this version on BBC. I've never read the book and I need to. But any movies during that time, or Jane Austen stories I love. Since I'm recuperating I signed up for Netflix this month and I have rented any movies that take place during that era. To be able to travel back in time...hmmmmm...

  6. I really like the Miramax version of Emma. I think it is pretty true to the book - but of course condensed for time. Some things are rushed or left out...the BBC miniseries was able to cover things the Miramax version didn't. My big complaint is Ewan McGregor's terrible wig in the Miramax version.
