Liberty...

and Independence were on my mind yesterday as we took a trip to Philadelphia with Tim's sister and family.  It was amazing to be there on such an important day as this past election day.

The kids did the Junior Ranger program through the National Park Service and got to collect trading cards and had a booklet to fill out at different locations to earn a Junior Ranger Badge.

At the Liberty Bell they had to unscramble the following words..."Proclaim Liberty throughout all the land to all the inhabitants thereof" from Leviticus 25:10.

 I thought it ironic, how far the divide is now between what the founders thought Liberty and Freedom was to where people are content to live with now.

At Independence Hall they learned that the founders meet together to discuss first whether to break a way from England. "When in the Course of human events it becomes necessary for one people to dissolve the political bands which have connected them with another, and to assume among the powers of the Earth, the separate and equal station to which the Laws of Nature and Nature's God entitle them..."

 The assembly room where men from the 13 colonies met to decide on dissolving political bands, and where with George Washington as the president of the Continental Congress, they finally signed the Constitution.

Betsy Ross's house.  Not part of the National Park Service, but we drove by on our way out of Philadelphia so that my niece, who had a read a book about her could see the house.

I have a lot I could say about being there yesterday, on such a day. But I don't have clear words yet.  My heart is saddened at the thought of where we started from and where we seem now to be content to live.

  1. I hear ya, Deanna - shared this on facebook. I can't get our Founders out of my mind. So grieved - but remaining hopeful in the Lord - He truly is ALL we have in this world.

  2. Philadelphia is so rich with history. I have been to all of the places that you mention, although it's been quite a while. (Note to self: great field trip idea for this year of American history studies.)

    It's times like these (although it truly should be ALL the time) when I treasure my status as sojourner in this world. Our citizenship is in Heaven! (Phil. 3:20) And my heart is drawn to the fact that we have Christian brothers and sisters in other nations who do not know political liberty, and yet have true liberty! God help us.

  3. You hit the nail on the head. It's how we are "content" to live. What a tragic chapter in the story of the American people. I'm too sad this morning to say much else.

  5. I liked seeing your photographs. What a timely visit. This country was set up so that we would have the biggest middle class ever in history - in a "land of opportunity." I am sad today as the "opportunity" part is something fewer people seem to hold dear, desire, or take advantage of.
