Home Keeping: Preparing For Thanksgiving

We host Thanksgiving every year.  It is such a joy to do so.  I love having family and friends join us for this day that we set aside to focus on Thankfulness.

I always slow roast my turkey so that it is perfect every time.  This will not give you a picture perfect bird, but it will give you super moist meat that is falling off the bones and the moistest breast meat you've ever tasted.

This holiday is all about the meal for us, so we love to have a real feast!  Turkey, gravy, stuffing, mashed potatoes, roasted sweet potatoes, green bean casserole, cranberry salad, rolls.  And pies.  Pumpkin, Apple, Chocolate Surprise, my Mom's pumpkin roll.

I learned to make stuffing as a girl.  My grandma taught me.  We would use bread that had been dried out for a few days, and add sautéed onions and celery, sage, poultry seasoning, salt, some broth, and a few eggs.  Delicious.  I still make it the same way.

I love to set a beautiful table.   Candles in silver candelabras, cloth napkins, beautiful dishes, and flatware.  Crystal glassware.

We usually do it buffet style, so that the people at the table are not crowded with the food.  I have a 9 foot counter that works perfectly for this.

For drinks we will do sparkling grape juice, and cider.  And of course coffee and tea.

I am cooking the turkeys, and Emma likes to do the mashed potatoes.  We'll roast the sweet potatoes too.  My Mama always brings turkey too, the cranberry salad, pumpkin roll and pumpkin pie.  My in laws are bringing  green bean casserole and apple pie.  Nate and Kay will provide drinks and cranberry sauce, and dinner rolls.  We all do some and then no one is overwhelmed.

We will feast and laugh and be thankful.

I'm looking forward to it.

When we celebrated Thanksgiving last month it was the first in a long time for the whole family to be together. I enjoy seeing all the interaction and am blessed to have a loving family.
Our meal was similar to what yours will be but I am curious about your stuffing recipe. We have never put eggs in ours, also do it in a baking pan and not inside the bird anymore.
It must be hard to have this holiday and Christmas so close together.

Your Thanksgiving plans sound wonderful--and delicious. You'll have to show us the table set with the new dishes!

Ohhhhh...it all sounds so marvelous! I like that you do the real dishes and tableware. For at least one festive meal of the year, it seems worth it. It's all about the fellowship around a beautifully set table and the fabulous food. Are you planning to stay legal that day? Will your eating program allow some splurges?

Yum! Sounds delicious. My favorite part of the meal is the dressing. I am not sure if any food reminds me more of my Mom than her dressing recipe. It all starts with the aroma of celery, onions, and butter long before we sit down to eat.

Wonderful plan! We are doing a turkey breast for the first time this year. So, it may be a bit different for us. It sounds like you have some help and a good plan!

It all sounds so delicious. Stuffing is my favorite part of the meal. Stuffing and gravy and cranberry sauce. Yum, yum, yum! Enjoy the preparations.

PS I haven't sent off your book yet - I've been a bit under the weather and then this week have been called in to teach every day. Hopefully I'll get things organized over the weekend.

Information Friday

We had a wonderful wedding weekend in Missouri! We drove, leaving Friday morning and came back on Monday! It was long, but it was worth it...
