In the end I used Annie Sloan Chalk Paint in Old White. I didn't use any special technique, just two coats of paint and clear wax. After the wax I lightly sanded with a 600 grit paper, and it is soft and smooth to the touch!
I'm so happy with it and can't wait to get the other cabinets painted, hopefully this week!
I am looking at drawer and door hardware - we've never put any on these cabinets. Melissa at The Inspired Room (+The Inspired Room) is doing a series on kitchen inspiration and posted about using black hardware. I love the way it looks, so now I'm thinking about that. This whole series by her is great and I am storing away ideas in the event we do a small addition (kitchen and mudroom/laundry room).
I'm super happy with the way this cabinet turned out, and everyone who has seen it loves it too! Now I just have to figure out the day to paint the other cabinets. I may do it in spurts over a few days, or may wait until next Saturday, but either way it should be done before Fourth! (can you believe that's a week away?!)
Happy Monday everyone!

I really DO like it!
Beautiful!!!!
Oh they look great! I purchased Sherwin Williams white paint to do mine two years ago, but didn't like it once I had painted a few things with it. Annie Sloan, eh? Must check out the colors she offers. Perhaps I can follow your good example before another two years passes.
Deanna, I am SO impressed...with your speed and also with the gorgeous results! What a fresh new look!! I was never sorry that I painted my cabinets at The Farmhouse. Like you, I was a little slow taking the plunge, but once we did it, we loved it!
I, too, am enjoying Melissa's blog as she is transforming their new home. I am getting lots of inspiration!
They are beautiful! I love white cabinets...wish my kitchen cabinets were white. My husband doesn't want them white, though. He's a "wood" guy (has a wood shop and does woodworking for a hobby), so he doesn't want me to paint over what he says is perfectly beautiful wood.
He did agree to adding hardware, though, and doing so really changed the look. Though I'd still enjoy white cabinets, I'm really happy with the way the hardware spiffed things up.
It is BEAUTIFUL!!!! I will go back to earlier blog posts of yours to see what they looked like before! I usually do the distressed look because that's about the only thing I've done that turned out really well for me! LOVE yours!!!
It looks great. What were they before? I look forward to seeing what hardware you choose!
Ohhhh I love it!!
I'm still in the waiting for hubby to be on board stage...
Hopefully some day..
I LOVE white cabinets and had planned to paint ours white. But I had an accident three years ago and can't do it now. I have always been the painter/decorator in our home and now I can't do it. I'm so disappointed because it would perk my kitchen right up. Yours look just fabulous and I'm really happy for you. Your kitchen will look completely different when you're done and it gives you such a lift. Looking forward to when it's done. Thanks for sharing and have a beautiful day.
Blessings,
Sandi
They look great!
Deanna, I can SO relate to this post! First of all, your cabinets look fabulous!! It completely transforms your kitchen doesn't it? I painted my cabinets white about a year ago and I couldn't be happier with the results. I had considered chalk paint but had never used it before so I took a chance on Nuvo Cabinet paint made by the same company (Giani) as my counter top paint, which I used several years ago. I chose oil-rubbed bronze hardware, some of which was already on them but my favorite thing I added were the cup pulls for the drawers...love the look of them so much. My cabinets went from oak to a soft, creamy white and I am still loving them...I don't know why I waited so long! Here's the address to my post about my cabinets if you want to take a peek.... http://debbysfavoritethings.blogspot.com/search/label/paint
OK, now I feel like a real slug!! I always put off this kind of project for eternity and secretly hope to win the lottery to pay someone. Your cabinets look amazing and the idea of black hardware is awesome.
Can't wait to see more. Happy Thoughts of Home. :)
Wow your kitchen is wonderful! I painted mine during Easter holidays and I'm so proud!
