Freestone Peaches Are The Best Part Of Summer!

It's peach season in Pennsylvania! This is the best thing about summer in my book!

Freestone means that the fruit comes away freely from the pit of the peach.  Freestone peaches have such great flavor, and the ones I am showing you today, are called Red Haven.  They are one of the earliest of the season to be ready and they are delicious!

I always buy a half bushel of Red Havens and savor them.

We've already been enjoying the ripe ones and these in the box are still not ripe.  They will be in a few days.  I'll cut them up for eating, and I'll freeze some.  Its so delightful to eat these peaches in January!

We have about 8 weeks or so to enjoy a wide variety of peaches.  Sun High, Loring, John Boy, Crest Haven, Bounty, Flaming Fury.  Flaming Fury are another favorite! This list goes on.

My favorite season is coming, but I'm going to savor the end of summer goodness.  Peaches make the hot, humid weather we've been having worthwhile.

Do you love peaches?  What is your favorite?

Breakfast

I'm enjoying peach season to the fullest!  Fresh Red Haven peaches with some low fat cottage cheese for breakfast. Delightful.

Happy Wednesday.

Peach Season

Que Andy Williams singing "It's The Most Wonderful Time Of The Year!"

Freestone peaches are now in season in Pennsylvania!

One of the first to ripen are ripen are Red Haven, my favorite.

Growing up in California, I never knew just how many varieties of peaches there were in the world.  So delicious.  I love many different varieties, Red Haven, Sunhigh, John Boy, Flaming Fury!

You can see a list of varieties and approximate ripening dates {here}.

Once peach season is over, it is Autumn, so peach season makes me happy for that reason, too, but we won't speak of that quite yet. {wink}

Do you like freestone peaches?  Do you have a favorite recipe you make using peaches?  I usually just slice them up to eat, sometimes with cottage cheese or yogurt, and I have made jam before, too.  I'd love to hear your favorite way to enjoy them.

My brother and his family leave tomorrow, and I am taking them to return their rental car and to get some lunch before heading to the airport.  We'll miss them, and have enjoyed our time together.  I'm so thankful they got to visit DC, and Lititz, and enjoy all the favorite places around here.

See you Friday, friends!

Late Summer/Early Fall

The late summer/early fall weather is so delightful.  Mild days, cool nights.  Bliss!

I'm letting my Limelight hydrangea dry naturally and they are so beautiful.

The kids and I (mainly the kids) did a lot of weeding the last two days.  I cut back many of the spent plants and we found this little, perfect blue hydrangea.  I put it on the back of the sink where I can see it all day.

While I am delighted that autumn is nearly here, and the signs of the changing seasons are everywhere, I am happy that it is still peach season!
If you've never eaten a freestone peach, I feel sad for you!  These are Flaming Fury peaches.  The taste is amazing!

I'll be cutting these peaches today for eating.  Between us and our friends, this half peck box full will be gone in no time!

We are enjoying hanging out with our friends.  We've known them for 28 years this month.  They are in reality, family to us.  They'll be here until Wednesday.

I hope you have a delightful weekend, friends!

Peach Season

Just behind my love of autumn is my love of peach season.  In our area peach season starts with Red Haven peaches in the last week of July, and ends with Laurol in mid-September.

These are called Flaming Fury.

I could live on peaches during these months, but I don't anymore because they are higher in natural sugars.  I do enjoy them, and eat them in smoothies, with cottage cheese or simply sliced up.

I buy mine from a local orchard, which is one of the many things I love about living here.  Such great local, fresh food!

Are you a fan of peaches?  How do you like to use them?

My Favorite Thing About Summer

Freestone peaches!  Locally grown!

Lindsay, Rachel and I made a trip to our local orchard.  We didn't pick them, though.

I am going to can a lot of peaches this year!  I can't get enough of them!

How about you?  Are you a peach lover?  Do you do much canning of summer produce?

Summer Eating

We stopped by a local produce stand today and bought some sweet corn - both bi color and white.

I saw a tip online for cooking the corn in the oven with the husks on @ 350 degrees for 25 - 30 minutes.

Chop the big end off...

Peel from the other end - the husks and the silk just come right off.

Easy peasy....

We paired it with grilled chicken...

Locally grown, amazingly delicious cantaloup, and peaches.

Lindsay and I peeled a half peck of peaches today and after eating some for dinner and setting some aside for munching tomorrow, I decided to can 4 quarts.

We can't wait to enjoy some of that peachy goodness in the middle of the Winter.

Do you do any canning?
