Lilacs In Bloom Just Like I had Envisioned

This lovely bunch of lilacs can be seen right out the kitchen door. Whenever we come in or out of the house we can smell these delightful flowers.

That is just how I hoped it would be all those many years ago when I bought two small lilacs from Costco. I had a vision, and it has come to fruition.

That is why I am trying give good thought to how the plantings around our home will change with the addition. One big change is that this lilac is planted in the space that will now be a laundry room!

I want to make sure that where ever it is moved, it will be seen and appreciated. Maybe along the right front next to the garage. That could work.

This lilac which is out my current bedroom window (Sarah's room normally), won't need to move.

Lilacs In Bloom

Outside my kitchen door is a lovely lilac bush. I have pruned it into a tree shape, and just re-pruned it last year. Most of the flowers are higher up on the bush because of this, but a few are eye level.

I just read that 2022 is the year of the lilac according to the National Gardening Bureau. The common lilac - syringa vulgaris is hardy and they can grow for 100+ years, sometimes out lasting the houses they were planted around!

I have one outside my bedroom window, too. both of my lilacs are about 10-12 ft tall.

A few quotes about lilacs that I found.

"A lilac only blooms after a harsh winter." Lilac Girls

"The smell of moist earth and lilacs hung in the air like wisps of the past and hints of the future." Margaret Millar

"The lilacs are in bloom...forget yourself." Marty Rubin

For me, lilacs are a joy in my garden. They bring beautiful scent, and I've planted them were we see them on a regular basis.

I often will cut some to bring into the house. Since they have a woody stem, I take a small hammer and smash the end of the stem to help it draw up water and last longer.

Nate and Kay had a lovely huge lilac that bloomed gorgeously every year in their community. Someone new bought the property and had some trees cut and they also took out the lilac. We are so sad about it.

I hope you have lilacs where you live.

Weekend

We had a good weekend.

Friday night we had family night, and played RummyKub (rummy cube), and talked a lot. Saturday Tim had some jobs to do then he and Kyle did lawn mowing at my parents house and at some older friends of ours who have health issues.

I took the opportunity to putter around the house, clean bathrooms, tidy the kitchen. I had the doors open and let the warmth and fresh air in the house.

Spring is showing off this year with the flowering trees and shrubs. My lilacs are getting close to blooming!

Sunday we went to church, and then came home and got take out Chinese food. Kamryn's friend came home with us for the day, and while we had expected thunderstorms (they arrived in the evening) it was mostly sunshine. The girls played outside all afternoon, in the creek, running around the pasture, riding scooters. It was fun.

I hope your weekend was full of good things.  There is a lot going on in our world, not just the United States, and it is scary and hopeful all at the same time.

Lilacs In The Kitchen

I went out this morning to cut lilacs. Its been raining off and on for several days and they were wet, but oh, so fragrant.

I have two lilac bushes - one right outside the kitchen door, and one at the back of the house near the peony bushes.  I cut these from the one at the back of the house, since I more often cut from the one by the kitchen door.

I'm delighted in how beautifully the lilacs are blooming this year.

I love having fresh flowers in the house, too.

They add real beauty.

Now to decide.  Do I leave them at the kitchen sink or put them on the kitchen table.

Thoughts?

A New Life Story

Remember how I was boo hooing over my lilacs, and how I was sure that due to their early budding, and then our deep freeze for a week, that I was going to get no lilacs?

Well, that turned out not to be true!  My lilacs have sprung to life! I couldn't believe it last week when I realized that they were going to be blooming, and this week they've started.

I thought that was kind of appropriate for Easter week.  Beauty for ashes, that is just what God gives us as a gift from the death and resurrection of Jesus.

Weekend

Spring is definitely here! Forsythia is in bloom, daffodils are as well. My lilac has leaves, the maple trees have their seeds starting.  ...
