The Cottage - Book Review

As a reviewer for Bethany House, I get emails every month with books available for review.  Sometimes I request one and sometimes I don't. When I saw the book 'The Cottage' by Michael Phillips, it caught my eye as it takes place in Scotland.

If you've read here for any length of time you know I love Scotland, and the story line was intriguing as it had to do with an American woman who has inherited the Lairdship of a whole island in the Hebrides.

It wasn't until I had finished the book that I realized that this was a second book, and I am hoping there is a third!

This is not heavy reading, but it was perfect for reading during this fall election cycle.  It has a very nice storyline, as the main character learns of her family heritage, and learns to love the people of the island, even though she is a sassenach, and looked on with suspicion.

The author also brings in a storyline from a series of books he wrote many years ago - The Stonewyck Triology.

Bethany House supplied me with the book, but the opinion is all mine!

  5. Okay, there's a word I must look up, though I think it means an "outsider" from context. You would be drawn to a story of Scotland. I still remember that you talked me into watching Monarch of the Glen and I lasted as long as Archie did. =D

That inheriting an old house is a common theme in literature and one I like very much.

  7. I was wondering where Michael Phillips had gone. Our library used to have a big collection of his titles but they are now removed, Maybe they'll get this new one, Thanks for the review, I'll look out for it!

  8. Reading back through your blog a bit and so glad I found this post. I read a number of books YEARS ago written by Michael Phillips and Judith Pella also set in Scotland (The Stonewycke Saga). I then read a series set in Russia and began reading the Secret of the Rose which I have (somewhere) but never finished. I love his writing, but between child rearing and working from home have not read much fiction in years. I am glad to be reminded of his writing now that I have time to read more.
